My name is David Podut, I am a Romanian artist. One day, I was asked in class what differentiates us from animals. My answer was art.
“How can you know for certain that a pig rolling around in mud isn’t creating some form of art in his mind?” said my professor.
“Because pigs don’t have will. They aren’t driven by wants, but rather by needs. They do not suffer from the lack of television, cars, or nice jackets. They do not dread the knowledge of death. So, one such present animal cannot imagine the past or future with the same melancholy or worries. Therefore, the need for creating art is not present, for art is an expression of desire and lack.”
